SHIFT: Kuwait’s Movie Night for Charity

This should be a fun event.

We’re going to have an exciting movie night (actually two nights), where we get to watch several shor contemporary films made by local Kuwaiti talents; all screened in Kuwait’s last old cinema: Grinata Cinema.

SHIFT is the name of the event, and it will take place on two nights: May 8th & 9th, starting at 7 pm.

Tickets are on sale via this site and at Bayt Lothan. All ticket proceeds will be going to local Kuwaiti charities that cater to children with special needs.

Thanks Um Faisal  for the tip :)

Review of the Movie Battleship

I went to see Battleship today. I initially got excited about watching it when I saw its trailer a few weeks back, but then I read Mark’s review about the movie, and he didn’t like it much.

However, today I woke up mid-morning and lazy, and just had the urge to watch a movie. Battleship was the 1st and only early show of the day (12.30 pm), so I decided to go see it after all.

I’m so glad I did. I enjoyed the movie so much. It was both action filled and humorous at the same time, and had a lot of light human moments. The movie is well done too. All the ships, ocean, machines, and fighting and action look great; just like you were watching a tight Transformers movie, but with heart and humor.

The movie was action filled, but not too scary. It had a few lovely moments, without overdramatizing it. And the scenery, cast, and special effects are all pretty on the eyes. It’s just a fun clean movie to watch, that luckily ends in a heroic triumph.

You’ll easily recognize most of the main cast members. The star of the movie is the John Carter guy, who is also joined by his TV buddy (from Friday Night Lights). Of course, there’s Rihanna in her first movie rule, and she doesn’t suck. She’s kinda like a tiny fireball with a yoda mouth, running and fighting all the time. And if you’re a fan of True Blood, then you’ll be glad to see one of its stars in the movie too.

Finally, the movie is based on the board game Battleship. If nothing I said here entices you to see the movie, then maybe this tiny fun fact will. The movie is really good.

I had a great Battleship-movie coincidence today, because I got to see one of our very own Kuwaiti battleships while driving on Gulf Road.

Mohammad Hayef and the Ministry of Interior

You might have noticed the news reporting of increased raids on parties and drinking in Kuwait, on the hands of Al-Maba7eth and the M.O.Interior. The latest happened just this night, when a huge corporate party held in Olympia was busted.

Twitter and news agencies made it sound like it was a lurid party, where all kinds of satanic actions and frolicking is happening; not that it really was just a private corporate party. I would say logic prevents organizers from supporting illegal stuff like that, let alone to do it in public.

It’s great that the police are cracking crime like they’re doing these days, there’s definitely nothing wrong about that. In fact, it should be the case all year round: to crack crime and bust criminals.

But when the process becomes highly selective, concentrating police efforts on a very few (usually drinking, gambling, and sex)  crimes, then the process becomes a little questionable. We have other more serious crimes out there.

Al-Qabas newspaper mentioned, back in Jan 2010, that more than 80 thousand court verdicts were still outstanding, that the offenders are still free at large. Do you know how much 80 thousand people is? Do you think that all of them have secret hideouts where they can escape the eyes of the police? Don’t you think having more than 80 thousand verdicts and rulings outstanding and not fulfilled diminishes people’s sense of justice and righteousness?

So instead of listening to the threats of the likes of Hayef and his pals, shouldn’t the M.O.Interior focus on other more serious kinds of crime and prevention? Like better monitoring of traffic, patrolling neighborhoods, putting more police at malls and other crowded places? Catching those 80 thousand runaways?

Real Madrid is Coming to Kuwait Next Month

Kuwait Football Club is bringing the famous Real Madrid FC to Kuwait next month, to play a game here on May 16th.

Update (2): Get your game tickets [here].

Update (1): More details [here].

This is awesome news to all football fans out there. Kuwait FC has a very successful track record of getting top international teams, and in making them bring and play their top international stars too. You won’t regret buying a ticket for anything organized by Kuwait FC. In this case, you’ll get to see Cristiano Ronaldo and his star mates play in front of you, in person!!

When Kuwait FC got Brazil’s national football team to play here a few years ago, we got to attend a 2-day fun football event, and got to see all the top Brazilian players play in person infront of us. Kazma FC, on the other hand, flopped when they brought Barcelona FC to play in Kuwait. We had the worst experience with them, because all we saw was Barca’s 3rd team, not even a glimpse of Barca’s 1st or 2nd teams, and no stars whatsoever. Plus, Kazma over killed with ticket prices. I still feel that they robbed me of my money. Whereas, I feel Kuwait FC should have charged us more, because we ended up having a lot more fun than just a single football game.

No details yet on ticket prices or categories. [Link].

Weekend Fun: Marina World’s Water & Beach Sports Carnival

(Twitter, Facebook, and website)

Marina Crescent and Marina Waves are having their first Spring Fling Carnival. It’s a weekend of fun, filled with lots of entertaining sporting and water activities like: beach volley, beach football, tug of war, kiddi activities, live entertainment, competitions and prizes.

But best of all, they’ll be having an exciting water rafting competition (tomorrow from 9 am to 4 pm), which I think will be the highlight of the whole carnival.

Update: According to FroyoNation, it looks like the fire was arson:

Many politicians and enviromentalists warned about the dangers of the five million abandend car tires in Jahra area. They’ve repeatedly warned that Kuwait will face a huge polution catastrophe if the tires ever catch fire and burn.

Well, what they were afraid of happened tonight. The tires caught fire a few hours ago. The fire is already very huge, and the Fire Dept. has asked both the Army and the KOC for immediate help.

Al-Qabas has tweeted the the fire is 70 feet high and can be seen from 15 kilometers away, and that, in the next hour, the thick smoke will be seen from as far as 70 kilometers away.
